Exploration
of Mount Desert Island - Bar Harbor Maine: Virtual Tour
Guide and Information
"Thunder Hole"
Feel the power of the sea and hear it roar
when the seas rough waves comes crashing into the massive
granite. Keep in mind that over a million years ago the
Maine coast was a folded land mass worn down to nearly sea
level before ice sheets formed from Canada made their way
here flowing around the edges of the 11 mile ridge.
Then when thicker ice came it began to move up the slopes
until the entire island was covered in ice and it stayed
that way for thousands of years, locked in an ice glacier.
When the ice melted over 10,000 years ago, Mount Desert
became an island. In the background you can see
toward the left the many visitors walking down the steps.
You have to be careful of the crashing surf though. When
the driven tides thrust
into the narrow granite channel air becomes trapped and
escapes leaving a thunderous sound in it's wake |

Explorer Note:
Stay on the stairs, do not get too close. If
it is closed, do not attempt to walk down the rocks.
The best show is when the water is rough and their
is an explosion of water shooting up which you can
see from the road.
