Exploration
of Schoodic Peninsula - Winter Harbor Maine Virtual Tour
Guide and Information
"Schoodic Point"
Acadia is all around the downeast maine coast. In
addition to occupying 1/3 of Mount Desert Island it also
occupies 2,366 acres on the Schoodic Peninsula located on
the mainland
in the village of Winter Harbor (Gouldsboro).
This area allows you to drive right along the coast line
along the crashing surf. There are many opportunities
to pull over and relax. It is not as heavily
toured as the park across at Cadillac, which makes Schoodic
attractive in that way. The park is free of charge and
provides a 7.2 mile drive along the Ocean's edge providing
spectacular views of crashing surf, lobsters boats and
shorebirds. There is also a dock for fishing.
There are also many trails to hike at Schoodic.
Here, Schoodic is home to the annual lobster boat races,
lobster festival and has the last sardine cannery in Maine.
You can get there easily. If you are headed headed
Downeast from Ellsworth on High Street where all the major
shops and food chains are located bear left at the Y to go
onto Route 1 and head toward Schoodic. Once you
reach the Schoodic National Scenic Byway about 15 minutes
through the small towns and fishing villages of Lamoine,
Franklin and Sullivan, you'll see the signs for Gouldsboro
and Winter Harbor. Take a right onto Route 186 and
follow it to Winter Harbor to the Park entrance.
From Bar Harbor, you can take the Acadia Free Shuttles on
the Island Explorer Bus that serves the Acadia
Schoodic Peninsula which stops in Winter Harbor, Prospect
Harbor and Birch Harbor. It connects with
the Bar Harbor-Winter Harbor Ferry from June - October.
You can also hop on one of these shuttles on Mount Desert
Island as well. For more information and details call
