Exploration of Mount Desert Island - Bar Harbor Maine: Virtual Tour Guide and Information for  "SAND BEACH"

This is a very unique beach along the typical rugged coastline of Acadia.  It is 290 yards long and is etched between beautiful granite mountains.  It is made up of quartz and tiny ground mollusk shells.  This beach is accessed from the Ocean Road loop.  If you drive, you'll need a pass to access this road, otherwise a tour will take you here.  During the summer there is a lifeguard and swimming, but  the temperature of the water is a bit brisk.  There are several trails you'll want to walk.  The most popular at Great Head, just above the beach.  Also try the Gorham Mountain Trail, The Beehive & the Bowl which are all right here.  Make sure you have a trail map which will make it easy to locate and more enjoyable when you know where you are going.  The whole trail is less than 3 miles.

Explorer Note: The water rarely exceeds 55 degrees, but the beach is beautiful.
