Exploration of Mount Desert Island - Bar Harbor Maine: Virtual Tour Guide and Information on the "Carriage Roads".

The carriage roads in Acadia run 51 miles that were built in 1913 by John D. Rockefeller, Jr. who also donated 1/3 of the land.  It took 27 years to build the carriage roads which take you over granite bridges that he also built, 17of them.  They can only to be used for hiking, cycling, jogging and cross country skiing, and horseback riding on all but 2.  No cars are permitted.  Pets can go too, just make sure they are on a 6' leash. The carriage roads are crushed stone, 16 feet wide and they take you to scenic routes and  in a loop (if you follow the signs and have a map)  The best way to start enjoying the carriage roads is with a map so you know where you are going and you can plan your day.

Here are the Carriage Road Loops from lowest distance to the highest.  This is only a list so you can see that there are many Carriage Road loops to enjoy and many of them don't take too long at all.  You will find yourself wanting to try them all once you try the first one.  If you don't have a bicycle, there are several bike rentals available in Bar Harbor.....don't forget to pick up a map at the visitor center
