Exploration of Mount Desert Island - Bar
Harbor Maine: Virtual Tour Guide and Information
"SHORE PATH". This path has
been traveled by many a visitor since it's creation in the 1880's. Imagine the women in their
long dresses walking arm with well dressed men.
If you'd like to see more about the gilded age, visit the
barharborhistorical.org. The path
starts to the right of the municipal pier in downtown Bar
Harbor at the Bar Harbor Inn. The path takes you along beautiful
Frenchman Bay where you will see tall ships, cruise ships,
lobster boats and shorebirds that flourish here. You
might even seen the Queen Mary. You may want to
carry binoculars with you. As you begin your
stroll along the path, you will notice the large Bar Harbor
Inn... an interesting tidbit is that the main building was originally built as a club
during prohibition for wealthy summer residents to
discreetly indulge. When you pass the Inn,
you'll see Grant's Park (also known as Albert's Meadow)
where you can have a picnic from sunrise to sunset. You will also pass by the front yards of beautiful mansions
built during the town's golden age, some destroyed in the
fire of 1949 and rebuilt. Some are still private
homes, while others are fabulous inns. Another tidbit
about the shorepath is that the family that owned the Hope Diamond, the crown
jewel, had a home here, the home now gone. See a 360
degree tour of the shorepath from the granite rocks and
more information about this
attraction and many more.

Explorer Note:
If you are an early riser, you will enjoy a stroll
along the Shore Path as the sun rises because it
illuminates the porcupine islands in view.
